Urban Table is the hot new concept from the owners of BRGR in Corinth. Though located in the suburbs, it has a very urbane, chic look going on, one that would fit in beautifully in the cities of Chicago or New York. Though the location for this kind of operation is curious, and would seem to be more at home on the Plaza, it’s hitting it out of the park right where it is.
Part market, part counter, part bar and part restaurant, each element shines at any given hour. In a hurry? Grab a sandwich or salad to go. Want a drink? Saddle up to the sleek bar, order a glass of wine or a beer and watch the World Series on TV.
At breakfast and lunch, diners order at the counter from an array of selections on a chalkboard hanging from the ceiling. After sitting (if you can find an open table), a server will bring you your food. At dinner, the restaurant takes on a more
formal vibe, with table service and upscale entrées to complement the sandwiches and salads that are served during the noon hour. Fresh and seasonal are the buzzwords.
I’ve now eaten at Urban Table for both lunch and dinner, though I haven’t yet made it there for breakfast. My visits were a mixed bag. I loved the atmosphere and the concept, but the execution wasn’t consistent.
Lunch was the more successful of the two. I ordered the Good Day Deal, a half sandwich with a salad or soup. I chose the Roasted Chicken Panini on focaccia with pulled chicken, red cabbage, jalapenos and chili aioli, and paired it with the Garden Salad, a fresh mix of greens, roasted peppers, almonds, goat cheese and pistachio vinaigrette. The same salad is also offered in an entrée salad with dates and beets as well. Both items were fresh and very tasty. Though the sandwich was more like chicken salad than the menu description indicated, I really enjoyed it.
My dining companion had a lively and light tomato salad with avocado, a Parmesan crisp and mustard seed dressing. With the summer tomato season behind us, the menu has moved on to a more seasonal salad, a kind of grilled shrimp cobb salad.
Called Shrimp Buena Terra, the grilled shrimp lay atop chopped romaine mixed with roasted corn, bacon, and Oaxaca cheese in a red pepper pesto buttermil
k dressing. It was a pleasant salad, but not as flavorful as all those ingredients would suggest. I think the dressing could use a bit more pesto to add some zing.
The Double D Truffle GC sounds like a real winner on the menu, and was even featured recently as a top grilled cheese sandwich in the city. Someone’s standards are lower
than mine. Though it featured havarti, marscapone and bleu cheese, none of the cheeses were prevalent enough in the sandwich to discern any of them, though it probably would have helped had the sandwich been hot and the cheese melted to its ideal state. It also had truffle butter (couldn’t taste it), and way too much bread–a double decker without enough cheese in between to justify it.
