If you’re planning a trip to New Orleans for Mardi Gras, trying to sort out where to eat can be a bit overwhelming. Hopefully, this list will give you a start, though its hundreds short of being complete!
Mr. B’s Bistro. This Brennan family establishment is best known for its gumbo and BBQ shrimp.
Brigsten’s.
The chef/owner is a disciple of Paul Prudhomme, and though the menu is not traditional, you’ll be happy with whatever you order. The pulled pork appetizer on a corn cake with pepper jelly glaze will give Kansas Citians a taste of home with a twist.
Commander’s Palace. This is one of those iconic restaurants you just have to experience. Each room has a different aura, and no matter where you sit, you’ll think you’re at a party. The turtle soup is a classic.
Domilise’s.
The gold standard for Po-Boys. Though it’s hard to find, food pilgrims will want to make the trek. Unless you want to sound like a rookie, order it “dressed”.
Jacques-Imo’s. Go hungry and be prepared to wait. This no-reservation joint (unless you have a party of 5 or more) is lively, fun, and more than a little quirky. Be sure to order the alligator cheesecake!
Stanley. Owned by Scott Boswell of Stella fame, this all-day dining spot next to Jackson Square serves up hearty breakfasts, the perfect antidote for a New Orleans hangover.
Cafe du Monde.A must for beignets and cafe au lait, made with chicory.
Of course, you have to try any of Emeril Lagasse’s restaurants, John Besh’s flagship, August, Donald Link’s Herbsaint, the classic Bon-Ton Cafe, and Brennan’s for brunch. You won’t leave New Orleans hungry!
