Blue Agave Grill is a new restaurant on Hwy 291, just south of Hwy 50. Walking inside, the modern and clean decor is a pleasant surprise, as is the flat screen TV in the roomy bar.
And the Mexican fare is solid. It’s Americanized, don’t go there expecting the authenticity of Frida’s, but the food is fresh and satisfying. The menu is large, and includes burgers, sandwiches and salads.
The salsas were better than they looked. My first impression was of Pace Picante sauce, but these were far superior to that commercial brand. Typically when I ask for a hot salsa, it’s thin and fiery. This one was both green and red, as well as chunky.
I opted for a chicken fajita burrito, but switched out the sauce. Their version of a burrito sauce sounded like a mild ranchero sauce, and I prefer a chili-based style a la Santa Fe. So I ordered it smothered with enchilada sauce instead. My husband thought it was terrific– I wouldn’t go that far in my praise, but it was pleasant and I enjoyed (and ate) the whole thing.
My husband created a plate from a dozen selections, and went with cheese and onion enchiladas and a bean tostada made with whole beans. The rice that accompanied both entrees fluffy and flavorful.
Service was slow but very friendly and accommodating. Were it closer to town I’d go back, especially since they have great Happy Hour specials. I think I prefer Paparico’s, Poco’s and Rudy’s, and they are all more in my neck of the woods. But if you find yourself east of KC, go dig in.
